Psychic: Chris at The Occult Shop, 1373 Bathurst St. (#SCW)
What he predicted: Chris regretfully informed me that 2013 wouldn’t yield any major financial gains or travel plans. He also said that whatever was hanging over me at the moment would soon resolve itself, and that I would meet a new girl within the next few months. She would be a hippie or artist-type, possibly with ADHD tendencies.
What actually happened: Chris was mostly correct with his financial prognostication—I am still a starving artist. I also didn’t do any major travelling over the past year, unless you count driving 90 minutes on the 401 East to spend a long weekend at a friend’s trailer outside Brighton, Ont.
I did meet a girl at Manic Coffee that March, and we went on one date. She was a piano teacher and formerly an editor for a U of T student paper, but I can’t say if she had ADHD. We only went out once, so the love prediction was mostly bollocks.
When Chris told me, “Whatever is hanging over your head right now will soon resolve itself,” I was confused. I still am. I wasn’t sure what he was referring to then, and, even in retrospect, it’s hard to see what aspect of my life it could apply to.
Psychic: Vanessa at Toronto Love Psychic, 65 Elm St. (#DTN)
What she predicted: Vanessa looked deep into the tarot spread and said that I would work hard and that, soon, the big payoff would come. I would travel to a country with many jungles and people who don’t speak English. Unfortunately, though, I would not have a serious relationship again until I’m 34. (Yikes—that’s two years away.)
What actually happened: I can certainly say that I’ve been working hard this year to build up my writing portfolio. The big payoff hasn’t come yet, but I understand that finding success in a creative field takes years of effort and there’s no way around that.
When Vanessa said that I would travel to a country with a lot of jungles, she must have been looking into my past instead of my future—in 2011, I spent 17 days in Costa Rica, where I hiked through several tropical jungles and cloud forests. This year did not take me to any jungles; in fact, I didn’t even leave the country in 2013.
As for her grim relationship prediction… well, I am indeed single. Get back to me in 2016 on that one.
Psychic: Laurie Huston at Intuitive Soul, 43 Fernwood Park Ave. (#BCH)
What she predicted: Intuitive Soul’s Laurie Huston advised me to have courage and faith in what’s to come, and that there was also a “major wish” card in the tarot spread. She said that my career would pick up and that there would be travel related to my work this year. Laurie also revealed that I would meet many interesting people, and that I would move to a different city. I would take a vacation at the end of the year, and meet a new girlfriend with marriage potential, possibly someone in an alternative-health field.
What actually happened: Laurie was spot-on in one regard—last August, I moved to Montreal in the first of a series of moves I’m making in an effort to live all around Canada. Props to her for that, but the rest of her predictions fell flat.
I have not had any work-related travel, nor am I taking a vacation at the end of the year—unless you count going back to Toronto for a week to visit family a vacation. My career has picked up, but I have not landed a regular column, as she suggested might happen. She was right about meeting a lot of interesting people, but that’s to be expected when you’re a freelance writer.
Again, no girlfriend this year. I certainly haven’t met anyone who I would deem marriage potential. And I thought long and hard to recall if I even met anyone in alternative health and drew a blank.

What she predicted: Tara said that I would meet someone new in March or April on a work assignment, someone with brown hair, glasses, a sweet voice, and a childlike laugh. Concerning work, many opportunities will come up, there will be travel related to my work, and I will meet interesting people in my endeavours. A time of abundance will come, but only after a lot of hard work. She also saw me going to Vancouver or Northern Ontario this year.
What actually happened: Of all the psychics I went to, Tara gave me the most in-depth reading. I found myself nodding throughout most of the natal-chart analysis and her predictions were much more specific than any of the others I had received. Still, a lot of what was said didn’t come true.
As stated above, I’m still single at the end of 2013, so there was no new woman entered my life in March or April. (Actually, the person Tara described sounded a lot like someone I already knew, someone who I wanted to hook-up with but who had friend-zoned me long ago. My further advances were not well received.)
I have had a lot of new opportunities and met a lot of interesting people in 2013, but, again, no work-related travel. My time of abundance, however, is still pending. (Maybe I just need to work harder?)
I did not travel to Vancouver, and, as stated previously, only made it as far north as Brighton. I do, however, intend to move to B.C. when I’m done here in Montreal. Although Montreal is a beautiful city and a great place to learn French, it is not the best place for an Anglophone writer to advance his freelance career. C’est la vie.
